How can I request an appointment?
There are several ways…
You can visit my client portal to see my availability for new intake appointments and request an appointment there. If you don’t see availability that works for you, please reach out by phone or email, as there are occasions I may have additional appointments times not included in my online calendar.
Or you can simply contact me by phone or email to set up an appointment directly.
What is your cancellation policy?
I request 48 hours’ notice for any cancellation. This time frame allows other clients to receive notice of new availability they may have been waiting for.
Cancellations not made within this window are charged at the full session’s price.
But I understand that “life happens,” and you may have to cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice. In these cases, I will speak to you individually about your reason for cancellation and how to address the fee.
What is an initial intake?
This is our first appointment together. During this time, I will gather information about your concerns, review historical information to inform your treatment, and assess other areas of your life that might bear on your current issues.
This is usually the most intimidating appointment for clients. I’ve done counseling myself, so I can empathize with the hesitation to share personal details with a stranger. That’s why I make sure you’re relaxed and comfortable during this initial intake.
Please know that you’re not expected to elaborate on anything or share if you’re not ready to.
What kinds of clients do you see?
The majority of my training and experience is with children, adolescents, and families.
In the past ten years, I have also developed a passion for working with women and their unique challenges, particularly in early adult life.
I also specialize in treating trauma.
What services do you offer?
I offer individual counseling and parenting sessions (which may include your child). I use a variety of approaches and techniques – all matched to your comfort level.
These modalities might include sand tray, art, play-based, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), mindfulness, self-compassion, or trauma-focused therapy, including EMDR.
What will we do during treatment sessions?
Great question!
My first goal is to build rapport with you and develop a trusting relationship.
As we progress in treatment, we will use a variety of interventions to address your concerns. These will be based on your comfort level, if new circumstances arise during treatment, and what treatment modalities best suit your individual needs.
I sometimes give my clients “homework” to build skills between sessions (an hour a week together isn’t much time!).
We will always assess your goals and track your progress during treatment.
How can I get the most out of therapy?
I love this question, and it’s usually asked by those most motivated to create change in their lives.
My job as your therapist is not to fix your problems… or even tell you how to fix them. My goal is to help you understand your emotions, how you experience them, and why the same feelings keep popping out.
You’ll gain insight into your concerns, understand what’s behind them, and learn new skills to help you cope.
The most effective way to get the most out of therapy is to practice what you’ve learned between sessions.
Do you have children?
I get this question a lot from parents deciding if they’d like me to work with their children.
So… YES! I have two boys who are active and sweet – all rolled into one. I am a single mom, so I can relate to the demands of raising children and also navigating divorce for yourself and your children.
What do you do when you’re not working?
Well, I’m mostly being a mom!
But I am intentional about self-care, so I’ve developed some new hobbies and reignited some old interests over the years.
When there’s time, I enjoy putting together flower arrangements for my home or making something decorative. I enjoy doing chalk art, and I have a huge board displayed in the hallway… but I’m not very good at it! Last year, I discovered a local pottery class and instantly fell in love. When home schedules aren’t crazy, I sign up for 8-week sessions and block out that time weekly to focus on myself.
Do you have pets?
Kids love asking this question! I do have pets, including a larger variety than I ever imagined I would!
We have a super sweet rescue dog named Stella. She always wants a belly rub or to sunbathe in the backyard.
My youngest son loves turtles, so he got an aquatic turtle when he was old enough to help care for one. Since he is in a large aquarium, it only seemed natural to add some fish and snails!
My oldest son is asking for a frog. I’m leaning toward “yes.” (Shhhh – don’t let him know!)
